About 2 years ago, I was shopping at Value Village and came across two vintage portraits by the artist Charles Sindelar . One of the portraits was of Jesus. The other portrait was of some random dude. I was intrigued. I figured, buddy must be someone important if this artist decided he was worth drawing with the same pencil as Jesus Christ. I was so intrigued that I was unable to leave the portrait behind. It spoke to me in a really strange and compelling way. I opted not to buy the Jesus one, I hope it went to a good home.

At home, I hit the internet to find out about the artist. I learned that he claimed Jesus actually sat for his portrait.  I also learned that the portraits were produced for the  I AM Movement. The I AM Movement is all about the Ascended Masters.

From Wiki:

Ascended Masters, in the Ascended Master Teachings is derived from the Theosophical concept of Masters of the Ancient Wisdom or “Mahatmas”. They are believed to be spiritually enlightened beings who in past incarnations were ordinary humans, but who have undergone a process of spiritual transformation.

The more I researched the more interesting the subject became.  The Count of Saint Germain was the muthafukkin man. Most current theories state that he was the son of Francis II Rákóczi, the Prince of Transylvania, but look at this list of  his previous incarnations:

  • The ruler of a Golden Age civilization in the area of the Sahara Desert 70,000 years ago
  • The High priest of Atlantis 13,000 years ago, serving in the Order of Lord Zadkiel in the Temple of Purification, located near where the island of Cuba is now
  • The prophet Samuel, (eleventh century B.C.E.), who served as prophet, priest, and the last and greatest of the Hebrew judges
  • Hesiod, Greek poet whose writings serve as a major source of knowledge for Greek mythology and cosmology (circa 700 B.C.E.)
  • Plato, the great philosopher of Athens. (427 – 347 B.C.E.)
  • Saint Joseph, of Nazareth. Husband of Mary and Guardian of Jesus, first century C.E.
  • Saint Alban, late third or early fourth century, the first British martyr
  • Proclus, c. 410 – 485 C.E. Athens. The last major Greek Neoplatonic philosopher
  • Merlin, c. fifth or sixth century, Britain. Magician and counselor at King Arthur’s Camelot who inspired the establishment of the Order of the Knights of the Round Table
  • Roger Bacon, c. 1220–1292 C.E., England. Forerunner of modern science renowned for his exhaustive investigations into alchemy, optics, mathematics, and languages
  • Organizer of various Secret Societies in Germany in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, where he operated as the legendary Christian Rosenkreuz
  • Christopher Columbus, 1451–1506 C.E.
  • Francis Bacon, 1561–1626, England. Philosopher, statesman, essayist and literary master, author of the Shakespearean plays, father of inductive science and herald of the scientific revolution.

Pretty bad ass resume if you ask me. Alchemist, space tourist and international man of mystery…who better to adopt as a role model and icon of achievement.  I proudly hang his portrait in my home as a symbol of possibility. The Count of Saint Germain, a man who refused to perscribe to the laws of nature and the limitations of reality. I often wonder what form he would take today, if he is indeed still roaming the earth. I often think of Karl Lagerfeld, another man who is known for his boundless knowledge of history and his unworldly charm. It seems like a logical incarnation.

I’m resurrecting this blog from the dead in order to discuss an upcoming book to movie adaptation.

Several years ago, I purchased the book ‘The Devil in The White City’ at a second hand store. I was attracted to the subtitle that promised a tale of “murder, magic, and madness”. I love murder, magic and madness; especially when it’s non-fiction.

The book is a sprawling account of the events leading up to and during the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The author, Erik Larson, manages to cram it full of fascinating turn of the century history. He covers in great detail the construction of the “White City”; spending a lot of time discussing the complexities of organizing and executing such a huge event. He also covers the various exhibits and esteemed guests including Buffalo Bill, Francis Ferdinand, Susan B. Anthony an my perennial favorite Nikola Tesla. This alone makes fora gripping read.

But wait! There is more…

H.H. Holmes, America’s first serial killer set up shop at the Exposition. He quite literally set up a shop and a hotel that he used as a killing factory. He used the fair as a way to lure victims to his house of horrors; complete with specially engineered death rooms. You couldn’t make this stuff up, it’s that twisted.

After reading the book, I knew it would be just a matter of time before someone in Hollywood optioned the film rights. Well, it turns out someone has…Leonardo DiCaprio. I don’t blame him for jumping on it, H.H. Holmes is a real piece of work and any actor would be chomping at the bit to play such a developed sociopath. What interests me in this is DiCaprio’s relationship to Martin Scorsese. There are very few directors who could handle material of this scope; not to mention secure the budget required to make a period film of this magnitude. I do fear he will pass on the project because it would be much like filming ‘Gangs of New York’ all over again…DiCaprio, period piece, sociopath.

Whomever takes the reigns of this project will have so much material to work with, the task will be pairing it down to something digestible. It would be easy to focus on Holmes’ depravity and omit the details if the Exposition all together. I sincerely hope that does not happen, but just in case, I suggest reading the book to glimpse the magic.

Vegas Recap

I just returned from Vegas with my mom and sister (age 15).  Vegas with the family is a lot like an extended trip to the mall…lots of shopping and food court action.  These are the highlights and lowlights…

Best purchase: $300 coat marked down to $20 at the Premium Outlets…simple black coccoon coat…from Marciano of all places.

Biggest waste of money: The Criss Angel show at the Luxor. My sister loves him…I’ll give her a pass because she’s 15.  The only redeeming elements of the show were the TESLA coil (as I am completely obsessed with Nikola Tesla) and the Mark Ryden-esque set decoration. The illusions were not impressive and the “witty banter” was atrocious. I had low expecations though…so I can’t say I’m surprised.

Tesla rules!

Tesla rules!

Biggest Indulgence: Wynn Buffet…no more food please…ever. So full.

Most Delicious Meal: Quesadillas at The Border Grill…simple but fantastic…freshly made tortillas. Plantain Empanadas tasted so good, I could have had them as dessert.

Most Lust Inducing Footwear: The Dior collection at The Forum Shops was enough to contemplate grand larceny.  Who needs shoes with an African goddess heel? I do!

Nothing can go wrongo...I'm in the congo!

Nothing can go wrongo...I'm in the congo!

Biggest Bummer: The weather…14 degrees with wind and rain? Boooooooooooo!

Love at first sight: This Alexander Mcqueen dress made me get all girly…I’m not one to fantasize about wedding days and all that crap…but if I ever get married I think I will wear this:

It would look better on me.

It would look better on me.

I’m sure my dad would be mortified and convinced I’m worshipping satan because there is a skull on the dress. That’s a risk I’m willing to take.

So, in summary…my trip was a window shopping extravaganza. I’m looking forward to my brother’s 21st birthday next year…when I will have someone to go to the bars with.  I figure an older sister is the best wingman a kid can have…right?

When do I move in? YSL edition.

I just finished reading The Beautiful Fall, a book about the rivalry of Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld early on in their careers.  It’s worth picking up for the pictures alone.  I promise you won’t be dissapointed by the swimsuit picture (Karl).

Now, despite the enticing pictures of Karl Lagerfeld in a speedo…my heart still belongs to YSL.  These pictures of YSL’s home make me swoon. I love the mix. It’s clearly the house of a French gentleman with African Sensibilities (YSL was born and raised in Algeria).  I love how he really seemed to live with the art he collected. It doesn’t seem precious or show-offy.  Also, can you really fuck with someone who has an Egyptian sarcophagus? Nope. I don’t think you can.

Pictures from Vanity Fair.

I’d also like to point out that most mornings I can be found reading magazines in bed with a chihuahua, just like YSL. Seriously.

Purrrrrrrrrrfect

Purrrrrrrrrrfect

For some reason, Eartha Kitt has been popping up all over the place. I was watching UNZIPPED, the Isaac Mizrahi documentary and there she was being as bat shit crazy as ever. Also, she was mentioned as a style reference for the new Marc Jacobs collection in the new issue of VOGUE.  Finally, I read that Beyonce is planning on playing her in an upcoming Biopic (not sure I agree with that casting choice…but whatever).

For reasons that are likely very apparent to my close friends, I just love a quirky black girl.  Eartha is about as quirky as quirky gets.

I’m just dying over this song…see if you can spot the sample J Zone boosted.

Santa Baby…

I suppose it is a little early to start drafting a Xmas wish list, but that never stopped me before. This will be the first in a series of posts where I ask Santa for the gifts I really want this year. Ultimately, anything I really want I end up buying myself, because….wait for it…there is no Santa Claus! Right now, I have my eye on this serpent pinkie ring by Bijules NYC . Totally ridiculous and impractical…just like me!

My obsession…you’re my obsession…

When I was about 15 years old, I caught Fellini’s ‘Stayricon’ on television. The most memorable scene involved a woman giving birth to flames. The actresses name was Donyale Luna and she was one of the early black supermodels. Here are some pictures of her from the various fashion media outlets during the 60’s/70’s. If they ever make a movie of her life I will embrace anorexia for the chance to audition…no joke. She was a Grade-A weirdo, eccentric and dysfunctional. Her life would make a great film…kinda like a black factory girl…since she ran with that same crew. Click the thumbnails for a better look.
